In the theory of computation, a branch of theoretical computer science, a deterministic finite automaton (DFA)—also known as deterministic finite acceptor (DFA), deterministic finite-state machine (DFSM), or deterministic finite-state automaton (DFSA)—is a finite-state machine that accepts or rejects a given string of symbols, by running ...
The DFA method, like the AEM method, was originally made available in the form of a handbook where the user would enter data on worksheets to obtain a rating for the ease of assembly of a product. Starting in 1981, Geoffrey Boothroyd and Peter Dewhurst developed a computerized version of the DFA method which allowed its implementation in a ...
The state of a deterministic finite automaton = (,,,,) is unreachable if no string in exists for which = (,).In this definition, is the set of states, is the set of input symbols, is the transition function (mapping a state and an input symbol to a set of states), is its extension to strings (also known as extended transition function), is the initial state, and is the set of accepting (also ...
A common deterministic automaton is a deterministic finite automaton (DFA) which is a finite state machine, where for each pair of state and input symbol there is one and only one transition to a next state.
Oliver Drake was designated for assignment multiple times during the 2018 season, during which he pitched for five different teams. [1]Designated for assignment (DFA) is a contractual term used in Major League Baseball (MLB). [2]
An example of an accepting state appears in Fig. 5: a deterministic finite automaton (DFA) that detects whether the binary input string contains an even number of 0s. S 1 (which is also the start state) indicates the state at which an even number of 0s has been input. S 1 is therefore an accepting state. This acceptor will finish in an accept ...

At each step of the simulation, the active set of NFA states forms a new DFA state. If the new state is identical to an existing DFA state, it is discarded and replaced with the existing one, and the current branch of simulation terminates. Otherwise the new state is added to the growing set of DFA states and simulation from this state continues.
