Panola County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census , its population was 22,491, [ 1 ] with its county seat in Carthage . [ 2 ] Located in East Texas and originally developed for cotton plantations, the county's name is derived from a Choctaw word for cotton .
During this period, a courthouse and a high school were built. In 1947 Panola County Junior College was established in Carthage and founded KGAS-AM 1590 which began broadcasting in 1955. As a result of 19.6% population growth between 1970 and 1980, documented by U.S. Decennial Census; Panola General Hospital was established in 1997.
