Vermont Route 244 (VT 244) is a state highway located within Orange County, Vermont, United States. The route runs from VT 113 in Thetford to U.S. Route 5 (US 5) in Fairlee . The highway is 5.640 miles (9.077 km) long and provides access to the Post Mills Airport from Interstate 91 (I-91) and US 5 .
The West Fairlee Center Church is a historic church building at Middlebrook and Bear Notch Roads in West Fairlee, Vermont.Built in 1855, it is a fine and little-altered example of rural Greek Revival architecture, also notable for the association of its congregation with Nathaniel Niles, a prominent local minister, landowner, and politician.
It was first settled in 1766. On February 25, 1797, the western half of the grant was set off as West Fairlee. The population was 575 by 1859, when it had several sawmills, a gristmill, and an establishment for lead pipe and pumps. [6] The Fairlee Railroad Depot was built in 1848 by the Connecticut & Passumpsic Rivers Railroad.
The Asa May House stands in a rural area of eastern West Fairlee, on the west side of Blood Brook Road. It stands on 40 acres (16 ha) of land, now reduced from historically larger sizes, but with patterns of usage still evident in the presence of stone walls and foundational remnants of former outbuildings.
The town also sent men from Company A of the 15th Vermont Infantry Regiment, which was organized in West Fairlee in 1862. West Fairlee was the summer residence of Nobel-winning economist Milton Friedman, which he named "Capitaf." [citation needed] It was here that he and his wife, Rose Friedman wrote the 1980 bestselling book, Free to Choose.
Aloha Horizons Camp is located on the northern shore of Lake Fairlee, near the mouth of Middle Brook.
