Smithville is a city in DeKalb County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,004 at the 2020 census , [ 7 ] up from 3,994 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DeKalb County. [ 8 ]
Until US 70 was commissioned in Tennessee in 1926, the route was signed solely as SR 26. Prior to the 1930s, SR 26 followed its current route in its entirety (except for any later bypasses), but turned north on a path towards Cookeville to intersect SR 24. [4] That segment would later become SR 42 in the 1930s, and then SR 111 by the mid 1970s.
It proceeds north as New Home Road and intersects with U.S. Route 70 (US 70) and SR 26 on the west side of Smithville. After the intersection, SR 83 becomes Allen Ferry Road and goes east-northeastward to its northern terminus at SR 56 in northern Smithville.
Beginning at I-24 and ending at SR 111, the route is a controlled-access highway for approximately 24 miles (39 km). The highway goes north as a narrow four-lane freeway (concurrent with unsigned I-124) through downtown and has interchanges with West Main Street (exit 1), Martin Luther King Boulevard (exits 1A–B; unsigned SR 316), and Fourth Street (exit 1C; unsigned SR 389) before crossing ...
SR 1 begins as a primary route on Interstate 55 (I-55) in the middle of the Memphis & Arkansas Bridge at the Arkansas–Tennessee state line. US 61, US 64, US 70, US 78, and US 79 come off the bridge alongside SR 1; US 61 soon turns south with SR 14 and US 78 continues along E.H. Crump Blvd with SR 4 heading eastward.
