The best .308/7.62 NATO rifle that I've ever owned/carried was an M1A rifle. Get a decent scope mounted on it, zero it to your eyesight, ammo and rifle and you're golden for 800 meters with no major problem at all. I used the XM-21 version in Viet Nam as a sniper rifle and it WILL do the job.
7.62X39 – made famous by the AK-47 and SKS, developed in 1943, has seen service in major conflicts all over the world, available in civilian rifles such as the Ruger Mini-30 and various bolt action rifles. There are at least 3 things that makes the 7.62X39 a good choice as a survival rifle – 1. Availability of ammunition, 2.

You can use any Spanish small ring Mauser bolt from 1893 series of rifles or carbines. Those would be Model 1895 (all), M1916 Type 1 or Type 2 and the Model FR-7. Just make sure it has the flat bottom. (and, you have it properly headspaced to the rifle you are going to use it in) Here is a link to get parts.
1. Main Battle Rifle (MBR) - .308 in a folding stock PTR-91. .308 because it will do just about everything the M-16/M-4, AK-47/74, and SKS platforms in 5.56, 7.62x39, 5.45x39 will, just not quite as well for a couple of things, plus it can do things those platforms and cartridges can’t.
Buy you a cheap 22 or an air rifle. A Hornady .310 lead round ball over a couple of grains of your favorite pistol powder works pretty well, and would probably do the trick. Just prime the case, add the powder, and tap the ball into the neck. Never shot any critters with them, but they did chrono at about 650fps at 15 feet.
This ensures maximum safety and accuracy. 7.62x51 NATO is not the same round as .308 Winchester, though it will fit within chamber. 7.62x51 technically requires deeper headspacing to meet the miltiary specification and is known to function in Faxon .308 WIN barrels under most circumstances. However, due to the variation of components in the ...

Have 2 of them, and they can't be beat for the price imo. Other features include: A 20inch med weight 1/10 twist bbl. Oversize bolt knob.
It is the modern version of the hand-out rifle. The ultimate desgined hand out rifle has to be the M1 carbine. Small, handy, very low recoil, good sights. The high point has the same thing. It comes in pistol calibers, which means low recoil. In very novice hands, shooting past 100 yards will not be very productive.
The SAAMI specification for .308 allows for 62,000 psi while 7.62 NATO allows 60,191 psi. This means commercial .308 can be loaded hotter than commercial 7.62 NATO (and that multiple people in this thread are dangerously misinformed and reckless enough to repeat the misinformation without verifying a second source).
