The fall of Saigon [9] was the capture of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, by North Vietnam on 30 April 1975. This decisive event led to the collapse of the South Vietnamese government and the evacuation of thousands of U.S. personnel and South Vietnamese civilians, and marked the end of the Vietnam War .
North and South Vietnam therefore remained divided until the Vietnam War ended with the Fall of Saigon in 1975. After 1976, the newly reunified Vietnam faced many difficulties including internal repression and isolation from the international community due to the Cold War , Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia and an American economic embargo.
