On March 4, 1933, Lawrence Hoyt (1902–1982), [1] [2] a former sales manager for Simon & Schuster, [3] and Melvin T. Kafka (1905–1992) [4] [5] opened a rental library within leased space inside a Bridgeport, Connecticut, department store under the name Walden Book Company (named for Henry David Thoreau's Walden, a meditation on simple living in natural surroundings). The younger Chandler was chosen Chester's Town Clerk at a 1763 meeting of the founders, which took place in Worcester, Massachusetts. [2] He continued in this office until 1765, and served as Town Clerk again from 1777 to 1779.
He graduated from the academy in St. Albans, [2] read law [3] with his uncle's firm, Smalley & Adams, and was admitted to the bar in 1831. [4] He practiced in Jericho, Vermont, where he was also postmaster from 1831 to 1836. [3] He subsequently relocated, first to Lowell, Vermont in 1836, and then to Burlington, Vermont from 1836 to 1857. [3]
