The modern national honours of Sri Lanka was constituted in 1986 by the Extraordinary Gazette No. 387/3 issued on 2 March 1986, which established a uniquely indigenous honours system of titles, decorations and medals which are awarded to recognise achievements of, or service by, Sri Lankans or others in connection with Sri Lanka.
In August 2019 President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena awarded national honours to 70 individuals for distinguished services. [1] [2] The awards ceremony was held on 19 August 2019 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo. [3] [4]

Deshamanya (Sinhala: දේශමාන්ය, romanized: Dēshamāṉya; Tamil: தேசமான்ய, romanized: Tēcamāṉya; Pride of the Nation) is the second-highest national honour of Sri Lanka awarded by the Government of Sri Lanka as a civil honour.
In February 2023, President Ranil Wickremesinghe awarded the highest national honour of Sri Lanka to former Speaker of the Parliament Karu Jayasuriya. [1] [2]
The honour can only be held by five living Sri Lankans at any given time, and may also be conferred posthumously. [2] Karu Jayasuriya is the only living recipient of the award as of 2025. Since its initiation in 1986, the award has only been conferred to nine individuals.
