The then Duchess of Cornwall became the first Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police in November 2012. The Royal Australian Corps of Military Police have played a role in World War I, World War II and aided in conflicts since the finish of the second world war, including Afghanistan and the Timor Leste Crisis.
Robertson Barracks is a major Australian Army base in Holtze, a suburb of Darwin in the Municipality of Litchfield, about 15 km (9.3 mi) east of the Darwin city centre. On 1 July 1930, the 1st Battalion was amalgamated with the 19th Battalion, later adopting the title of the 1st/19th Battalion (City of Sydney's Own Regiment). [4] The two battalions remained linked until 1939 when due to the prospects of war a number of Militia battalions were delinked in preparation for an expansion of the Army.

On 15 November the brigade was transferred to the 1st Division. On the 30th of that month the 2nd Force Support Battalion moved to the 2nd Division. On 2 December the brigade gained the 1st Military Police Battalion, 6th Engineer Support Regiment, 12th Chief Engineer Works and 19th Chief Engineer Works from the 6th Brigade. [10] [11]
On 2 October 2018, the 1st Military Police Battalion transitioned from the 17th Brigade to align it with other theatre-level combat support capabilities that were already under the command of the 6th Brigade. [25] The 20th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery was transferred from the 6th Brigade to the 16th Aviation Brigade in 2022. [26]
In March 1901, the Australian Army came into existence as the Commonwealth Military Forces through the amalgamation of the former colonies military forces. The existing regiments and battalions of the colonies were reorganised and renumbered due to their absorption into the national army and subsequently formed the first military units of a united Australia.
