In poetry, a stanza (/ ˈ s t æ n z ə /; from Italian stanza, Italian:; lit. ' room ') is a group of lines within a poem, usually set off from others by a blank line or indentation. [1] Stanzas can have regular rhyme and metrical schemes, but they are not required to have either. There are many different forms of stanzas.
English-language haiku is an example of an unrhymed tercet poem. A poetic triplet is a tercet in which all three lines follow the same rhyme, AAA; triplets are rather rare; they are more customarily used sparingly in verse of heroic couplets or other couplet verse, to add extraordinary emphasis. The Spenserian stanza is a fixed verse form invented by Edmund Spenser for his epic poem The Faerie Queene (1590–96).
