The hotel was founded in 1917 by Anglo-American brothers Charles Mace (combat and commercial photographer, 1889-1973), and Gordon Mace, and their families. [3] The Inn is known especially two reasons: the hotel was named for the popular mystery novel, play and films Seven Keys to Baldpate by Earl Derr Biggers, and was eventually accepted to be the "true" Baldpate by the author.
The original Westminster High School was located at 7300 Lowell, which later became the Career Enrichment Park when Westminster High School moved from 73rd and Lowell to its current location in 1976. When originally established in 1949, the school colors were blue and white, and the mascot was a Warrior.
The 22-story, 231-room tower directly across Tremont Place was built as a new wing of the hotel in 1959, known as the Brown Palace West. [10] For many years it operated as a budget wing of the hotel, until the Brown Palace's owners branded the guest rooms in the annex as a Comfort Inn in 1988, and then as a Holiday Inn Express in December 2014. The school was incorporated as Westminster University of Colorado, and classes began in 1908 with one year's tuition costing $50 ($1,411 in 2018). [9] The school ceased operating in 1917, when all students in attendance left to fight in World War I . [ 10 ]
