Tom Percival is the series' illustrator. The books revolve around the adventures of fledgling detective Valkyrie Cain and her mentor Skulduggery Pleasant, along with other friends and allies. The central story concerns Valkyrie's struggle to stop evil forces threatening the world and her internal struggle to resist the darkness within.
It was a complete success, and I enjoyed every moment of it. Skulduggery is hilarious, Valkyrie is completely strong in both a physical and mental sense, and the perfect combination of humour, heart and horror cements Playing with Fire as my favourite Skulduggery Pleasant novel to date. Valkyrie and her friends race to the stadium and Fletcher manages to teleport the duplicate bomb to the ocean, where it explodes safely. The Sanctuary arrests some of the Revengers' Club, but are then betrayed by Davina Marr, who uses Myron's True Name to force him to blow up the Sanctuary with the original bomb.
Meanwhile, Valkyrie's alter-ego, Darquesse, is on the verge of bringing about the end of the world. In 2013, Skulduggery Pleasant: Last Stand of Dead Men won the Senior Irish Children's Book of the Year, and was released in the US and Canada in 2018.
