In information technology, a backup, or data backup is a copy of computer data taken and stored elsewhere so that it may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form, referring to the process of doing so, is " back up ", whereas the noun and adjective form is " backup ". [ 1 ]
World Backup Day started with a post on Reddit where a user wrote about losing their hard drive and wishing someone had reminded them about how important it is to backup data. The campaign started by Ismail Jadun in 2011 and every year news outlets write articles about the importance of backing up data on World Backup Day. [4] [5]
True continuous data protection is different from traditional backup in that it is not necessary to specify the point in time to recover from until ready to restore. [5] Traditional backups only restore data from the time the backup was made. True continuous data protection, in contrast to "snapshots", has no backup schedules. [5]
Backup solutions generally support differential backups and incremental backups in addition to full backups, so only material that is newer or changed compared to the backed up data is actually backed up. The effect of these is to increase significantly the speed of the backup process over slow networks while decreasing space requirements.
This ensures that the most recent data is available locally in the event of need for recovery, while archived data that is needed much less often is stored in the cloud. [ 1 ] Hybrid Online Backup works by storing data to local disk so that the backup can be captured at high speed, and then either the backup software or a D2D2C (Disk to Disk to ...
Regular data backups are an important asset to have when trying to recover after a data loss event, but they do not prevent user errors or system failures. As such, a data backup plan needs to be established and run in unison with a disaster recovery plan in order to lower risk. [7]
