Mary Rhodes Russell (born July 28, 1958) [1] is the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri. [2] She previously served a two-year term as chief justice from July 2013 through June 2015. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2004 by Governor Bob Holden .
She served as a judge of the Missouri Court of Appeals from 2020 to 2023 and as chief judge July to September in 2023. In 2024, she voted against allowing the initiative to legalize abortion and women's reproductive rights to appear on state-wide ballots for the November 2024 election. She was part of the dissenting opinion in the 4-3 ruling.
The judges rotate the two-year term of Chief Justice among themselves. The Chief Justice is Constitutionally empowered to preside over the court and to be the "chief administrative officer" of the state judicial system.
