The Washington State Historical Society is the historical society of the U.S. state of Washington. Based in Tacoma , it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is a trustee agency of the state. It was founded in 1891.
Washington's State Historic Preservation Office was first created by Washington State Bill 363 in 1967. Within a year, the State Advisory Board convened for the first time, and it was staffed by the State Parks Department. Funding for the program was not secured until 1973, and coincided with the creation of the Washington Heritage Register.
There are at least three listings in each of Washington's 39 counties. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes buildings, structures, objects, sites, and districts of national, state, or local historic significance across the United States. [1] Out of over 90,000 National Register sites nationwide, [2] more than 1,500 are in Washington.
