The Hamilton Group is a Devonian-age geological group which is located in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is present in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, northwestern Virginia and Ontario, Canada, [1] [2] and is mainly composed of marine shale with some sandstone.
The Marcellus natural gas trend is a large geographic area of prolific shale gas extraction from the Marcellus Shale or Marcellus Formation, of Devonian age, in the eastern United States. US shale gas basins, 2011. Shale gas in the United States is an available source of unconventional natural gas.Led by new applications of hydraulic fracturing technology and horizontal drilling, development of new sources of shale gas has offset declines in production from conventional gas reservoirs, and has led to major increases in reserves of U.S. natural gas.
The Pottsville Formation consists of a gray conglomerate, fine to coarse grained sandstone, and is known to contain limestone, siltstone and shale, as well as anthracite and bituminous coal. [4] [5] It is considered a classic orogenic molasse. [6] The formation was first described from a railroad cut south of Pottsville, Pennsylvania. [4]
At the start of the Mississippian, in the Carboniferous, 340 million years ago, river and delta sediments covered over the shales, producing the Bedford Shale, Berea Sandstone, Cuyahoga Formation and Logan Formation. The deposition of these units was briefly interrupted by a return to a stagnant marine environment, forming the Sunbury Shale.
It unconformably underlies the Ohio Shale in northwestern Ohio and the Delaware Limestone in eastern Ohio. [ 2 ] Its members include: Bellepoint, Marblehead, Tioga Ash Bed , Venice, Delhi, Klondike, and East Liberty.
