The most common method of using shortened footnotes is with the {} template for the shortened footnotes, and {} templates for the full citation. The Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2 templates automatically create an anchor for an {} link, using the author last name and the year. An "anchor" is a landing place for a link to jump to.

Shortened footnotes. Instead of the full citation appearing in the footnote, a short form appears (e.g. Turner 1851), giving only the author and year (or in some styles, a shortened version of the article or book title), and page number if appropriate. The full citation appears later on, in a bibliography section.
The template facilitates article maintenance by enabling bots to recognize use of this format and by adding the article to the hidden category Use shortened footnotes. The template is invisible except in edit mode. This template should be applied only to articles that exclusively use shortened footnotes with a separate list of full citations.
The remaining footnotes will use shortened citations (these usually contain the author's last name, the date of publication, and the relevant page number[s]). A less common approach is to attach a {{rp|page}} right after the footnote marker replacing the "page" with the appropriate page number or numbers. For example:
