Mark Johnson is a former Olympic wrestler and two time NCAA All-American. He was the head coach at Oregon State University (1990–1992) and the University of Illinois (1992–2009), compiling a career record of 223-48-5 (.817).
Larry Kristoff, a two-time NCAA College Division (now Division II) champion at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and member of the U.S. National and Olympic wrestling teams was hired in 1969 to start the SIUE wrestling program. To accomplish this, he had no athletic facilities, no scholarships, and almost no budget.
His high school coaching career is legendary, with a reported career record of 855–153–2. He started as a coach with Maquoketa High in Iowa, then served most of his career coaching in Illinois at Tilden Tech, Mount Carmel and Brother Rice.
