One thing that's hard to tell about these two brands are that there are mixed reviews for both! People have given lots of mixed reviews on both brands.
Find a surplus 3-color desert BDU top. Take off the lower front cargo pockets and then sew them as shoulder pockets on to the upper sleeves of your M-65. Useful for small/soft items (1st aid dressings, smokes, signal aids, small survival items, bandanna, pocket notebook, phone, PSK, pill kit, etc.).

Buttoned into the M-65 Field Jacket you are good down to say zero degrees Fahrenheit. The M-65 has a built in hood that nobody ever uses but it is in there, the fur hood is actually not part of the M-65 but is a part of the winter Parka, it just so happens to be designed to button on to either. There's an old feller near here who has school bus loads of military surplus for sale. I got a US made issue M65 (in new condition) with liner for $25. Not the warmest coat I've owned, but definitely a favorite. Most similar jackets are not made in the US, and go for upwards of $100. Goblin X.
I wanted a jacket under $100 that blocked wind, rain, and was camo for hunting. I'm glad I went with the M65. Surplus ones are very cheap, but I couldn't find one in 2xl tall. I got mine from ebay made by rothco, $60 shipped. The waterproof blocks rain just fine. Its not a rain jacket, but its just as good as any goretex, just heavier.
I have an M65 field jacket circa 1970's issue, gift from my brother and I'm wondering what the temperature ratings are on these jackets. Now I know this is variable depending what insert you buy --I assume the come in different sorts, I've only seen the vest type at the surplus store.
Try bdu.com for Propper brand M-65 field jackets. They carry them in a variety of colors and sizes. The normal cost is about $89.00. I believe they use US material and are sewn in the Caribbean. Propper makes a great deal of Mil-Spec issue clothing. YMMV. I have been wearing Propper brand Tactical Pants for 10+ years.
Bought another for $60, pre owned without the liner. Great shape, all snaps and velcro tabs like new. I just throw a hoodie on now under on really cold days, and drop the M65 in my trunk going to the Sports bar for pizza. I see some for $100 with the quilted liner, or more, but the shipping is gone up too.
