Fort Dodge is a city in and the county seat of Webster County, Iowa, United States, [2] along the Des Moines River. The population was 24,871 in the 2020 census, a decrease from 25,136 in 2000. [3] Fort Dodge is a major commercial center for North Central and Northwest Iowa. It is located on U.S. Routes 20 and 169.
New buildings were constructed to expand services. A cemetery was established to inter residents who died and needed a place to be buried. As of 2010 approximately 400 veterans were buried in the Kansas Soldiers' Home Cemetery. In 2002 a new cemetery was established, the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Dodge.
It has, however, been claimed that the post was named for Col. Henry Dodge. [3] Moses Henry Dodge (he dropped the "Moses" when he came of age) led the Second Dragoon Expedition of 1835 in a circuit to and from Fort Leavenworth, west along the Platte River to Colorado and back east along the Arkansas River and the Santa Fe trail, passing through the future location of Dodge City and Fort Dodge.
