The city of Kannapolis was incorporated in 1984. The population was 53,114 at the 2020 census, [7] which makes Kannapolis the 19th-most populous city in North Carolina. Murdock proposed a redevelopment plan to the company and the community which included the renewal of downtown Kannapolis (now Cannon Village) and the construction of a brand new YMCA. On November 6, 1984, the Town of Kannapolis was incorporated as the city of Kannapolis. Also that year the new YMCA opened.
