The James Hardiman Library (Irish: Leabharlann Shéamais Uí Argadáin) serves the University of Galway in Ireland. It is a legal deposit or "copyright library", which means that publishers in the country must deposit a copy of all their publications there, free of charge.
In 2023 University Hospital Galway opened a new radiation oncology unit marking the largest infrastructure development in the history of the hospital. The 8,000sqm radiotherapy centre cost €70.7 million to build and commission and contains new technology which increases significantly the ability to accurately target and treat tumours.
The hospital, which was commissioned as a tuberculosis sanitarium, was designed by Norman White. [2] It was built on the site of Merlin Park House, a late Georgian property, and opened in 1953. [3]

James Hardiman (February 1782 – 13 November 1855), also known as Séamus Ó hArgadáin, was a librarian at Queen's College, Galway and an important historian.. Hardiman is best remembered for his History of the Town and County of Galway (1820) and Irish Minstrelsy (1831), [1] [2] one of the first published collections of Irish poetry and songs.
In July 2014 a number of serious hygiene issues were raised during an unscheduled inspection of the hospital by Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). These issues concerned the management of blood monitoring equipment at the hospital, and inspectors found blood-stained sticky tape on a window sill beside a patient's bed, as well as failure to dispose of used blood sampling equipment.
Bon Secours Hospital Galway was built in 1954 and was known then as Calvary Hospital. It was owned and managed by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary until 1985. Following a short closure, the hospital reopened as Galvia Private Hospital in 1986. In 1998, Galvia Private Hospital was purchased by the Bon Secours Health System. [4]
