The district encompasses 50 contributing buildings in the central business district of West Jefferson. The district primarily includes one-story and two-story commercial buildings dating to the early- to mid-20th century.
The county is located entirely within the Appalachian Mountains region of North Carolina. Most of the county is located atop a rolling plateau that ranges from 2,500 to 3,000 feet (760 to 910 m) above sea level. On the county's southeastern border the land drops sharply to about 1,500 feet (460 m) in neighboring Wilkes County, North Carolina.
