Lingual tonsils are covered externally by stratified squamous epithelium (nonkeratinized) that invaginates inward forming tonsillar crypts. Beneath the epithelium is a layer of lymphoid nodules containing lymphocytes. Mucous glands located at the root of the tongue are drained through several ducts into the crypts of the lingual tonsils.
Filiform papillae are the most numerous of the lingual papillae. [1] They are fine, small, cone-shaped papillae found on the anterior surface of the tongue. [3] They are responsible for giving the tongue its texture and are responsible for the sensation of touch. Unlike the other kinds of papillae, filiform papillae do not contain taste buds. [1]
The glossopharyngeal nerve continues past the palatine tonsil and innervates the posterior 1/3 of the tongue to provide general and taste sensation. [6] This nerve is most likely to be damaged during a tonsillectomy, which leads to reduced or lost general sensation and taste sensation to the posterior third of the tongue. [7] [8]

The epiglottic valleculae are paired spaces between the root of the tongue and anterior surface of the epiglottis. Each vallecula is bordered medially by the median glossoepiglottic fold and laterally by the lateral glossoepiglottic fold. The valleculae can collect saliva to prevent initiation of the swallowing reflex.

Upon reaching the superior border of the styloglossus muscle, the tonsillar artery penetrates the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle to enter the pharynx and reach the palatine tonsil. The artery then ramifies within the substance of the tonsil and musculature of the root of the tongue. [1]
