When the NHS was established in July 1948 dental treatment was free. Demand on the service was enormous. About a quarter of the dentists joined the NHS and by November 1948 83% had joined. Dental health in the UK was worse than that of Germany. In the first nine months of the NHS 4.5 million teeth were removed and 4.2 million teeth were filled.
The National Health Service Act 1952 (15 & 16 Geo. 6 & 1 Eliz. 2. c. 25) is an Act of Parliament passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It extended prescription charges and dental charges for National Health Service patients. [1] The one shilling charge for prescriptions was introduced on 1 June 1952. [2]

Charges were abolished by NHS Wales in 2007, Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland in 2010 and by NHS Scotland in 2011. In 2010/11, in England, £450 million was raised through these charges, some 0.5% of the total NHS budget. [1] As of August 2024 the prescription charge is £9.90 per item. [2]
