Balenciaga was born in the Basque town Getaria , Spain on 21 January 1895. [1] His father, José Balenciaga Basurto, was a fisherman who died when Cristóbal was a boy, and his mother, Martina Eizaguirre Embil, a seamstress. As a child Balenciaga often spent time with his mother as she worked. [1]
