Barrett was released in November 1970 on Harvest in the United Kingdom, but unlike his debut LP The Madcap Laughs it failed to chart; it was re-released in 1974 as part of Syd Barrett, which was the first US issues of these LPs. No singles were issued from the album.
An early version of the song, recorded with the band Soft Machine, was released on the Barrett rarities album Opel (1988) under the title "Clowns and Jugglers". The 1993 re-releases of The Madcap Laughs and Opel contain alternate versions of "Octopus" and "Clowns and Jugglers" respectively, as bonus tracks.
The song reappeared on the Harvest Records compilation Picnic – A Breath of Fresh Air and is The Madcap Laughs' sole representative on The Peel Session. [4] The Syd Barrett Appreciation Society titled its official magazine Terrapin (published 1972–1976), in tribute to the song.
