It is a training method taught at Gogulsa designed to extinguish worldly pains and attain enlightenment. The goal of this training is harmonization of mind and body united with breathing. Gogulsa has run Sunmudo training programs since 1992 for those who would like to experience the traditions of Korean Seon (Zen) Buddhism including Sonmudo.

The Gyeongju World Culture Expo is held every 2–3 years in at Expo Park just south of the lake. Many of the city's principal hotels are also located in this area.
