Al-Nassr lost their four most recent finals against Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal twice each. The two teams met four times earlier in the season with Al-Hilal winning twice, Al-Nassr winning once, and one draw between them. This was the 21st meeting between these two sides in the King Cup and the sixth meeting in the final. [9]
Al-Ahli was the first Saudi club to win the league and the King's Cup in the same season, and has done so twice - in 1978 and 2016. In the semi-final, Al Ahly lost against Palmeiras, the winners of the 2021 Copa Libertadores 2–0 to play against Al Hilal in the third place playoff match. Al-Ahly achieved the third place in the FIFA Club World Cup for the third time in the club's history after defeating Al Hilal 4–0, the biggest victory for Al-Ahly in the FIFA Club World Cup.
This will be Al-Nassr's fifth appearance in the final. Al-Nassr lost the 2014 and 2015 finals to Al-Shabab and Al-Hilal respectively and won the 2019 and 2020 finals against Al-Taawoun and Al-Hilal. Al-Nassr qualified by defeating Al-Taawoun 2–0 in the semi-finals. [8] Al-Hilal will be making their seventh finals appearance, the most by any club.
