The Dragons participate in UIL District 28 6A competitions for Academic Team, Athletics, Band, Drama, Choir, Color Guard, and Dance. Other co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities include NJROTC, National Honor Society, Best Buddies, Student Council, FFA, TAFE, DECA, Skills USA, FCCLA, and Academic Decathlon along with a FIRST Robotics program.
The school district spent over $500,000 on a system whereby students wear an RFID chip and barcode around their necks, allowing the school to track their location during the school day. The students needed the tag "to use the library or cafeteria, vote in school elections, and in some cases for toilet breaks". [ 9 ]
Through the program, students with special needs can take the majority of their academic classes at their home high schools and take career and technology classes at STISD high schools.
