Rockford is hired to investigate an accident at a health club, but the place is a hangout for illegal arms dealers, and Murray Rosner (Michael Lerner), the pivotal figure in the buying and selling of the weapons, thinks Jim is a police officer and wants him out of the picture.

When Rockford reports that he does not believe the man is dead, the mistress does not accept his conclusion and does not pay him. Rockford thinks the husband may have contacted the mistress in the interim, and negotiates with the insurance company that paid out on the plane crash for a finder’s fee if he can prove the husband and wife staged it.
Rockford is hired by a man (Larry Linville) to find his missing wife, a case he accepts only because he is offered extra money. When Jim reports potentially worrisome news the husband is more interested in asking Rockford questions than the danger his wife might be in, and again it takes extra money to keep Jim involved.
