John Harvard (1607–1638) was an English Puritan minister in Colonial New England whose deathbed [2] bequest to the "schoale or colledge" founded two years earlier by the Massachusetts Bay Colony was so gratefully received that the colony consequently ordered "that the Colledge agreed upon formerly to be built at Cambridge shalbee called Harvard Colledge".
In 1638, John Harvard, a childless colonist, bequeathed to the colony his library and half of his estate as a contribution to the college, which was consequently named in his honor. The church was founded in 1632 and held its services for a time in the Great House in the City Square and was later one of the six churches that led to the creation of Harvard University. [1] Rev. John Harvard served as an assistant minister at the church until his death from tuberculosis, from 1637-1638. [ 2 ]
