The Newcastle Sandstone is a geologic formation in Wyoming, United States. It preserves fossils dating back to the Late Cretaceous period . Named as a member of Draneros shale of Colorado group for the town of Newcastle, Weston Co, WY in Powder River basin, where member is conspicuously developed.
Sandstone quarrying began on Newcastle Island in 1869 when Joseph Emery from the United States Mint in San Francisco went looking for good quality sandstone for their new building. Finding the stone on Newcastle to be of the desired quality, he signed a five-year lease with the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company to cut stone for the building.

The petroglyph is located near the small village of Leo, Ohio (in Jackson County, Ohio) and is thought to have been created by the Fort Ancient peoples (possibly AD 1000–1650). The area in which the sandstone petroglyph was found is on the edge of an unglaciated Mississippian sandstone cliff 20–65 feet (6.1–19.8 m) high.
The Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is a 4-mile-long (6.4 km) sandstone formation through which the Licking River flows in Licking County, Ohio, United States. Located 12 miles (19 km) east of Newark near the tiny town of Toboso , 957 acres (387 ha) along the gorge were designated an Ohio Nature Preserve in 1975.
