Javan rhinos are smaller than the Indian rhinoceros, and are close in size to the black rhinoceros. They are the largest animal in Java and the second-largest animal in Indonesia after the Asian elephant. The length of Javan rhinos including their head is 2 to 4 m (6.6 to 13.1 ft), and they can reach a height of 1.4–1.7 m (4.6–5.6 ft).
The Indian rhino's single horn is present in both bulls and cows, but not on newborn calves. The horn is pure keratin, like human fingernails, and starts to show after about six years. In most adults, the horn reaches a length of about 25 cm (9.8 in), but has been recorded up to 57.2 cm (22.5 in) in length and 3.051 kg (6.73 lb) in weight.
When fully developed, antlers are dead bone without a horn or skin covering; they are borne only by adults (usually males, except for reindeer) and are shed and regrown each year. Rhinocerotidae : The "horns" of rhinoceroses are made of keratin , the same substance as fingernails, and grow continuously, but do not have a bone core.
The samples were collected from two rhinos that were less than 2 years old, two that were between 3 and 7 years old, two adult rhinos that had given birth at the zoo, and two that had been unable to.
Adult rhinos normally have no natural predators, due to their imposing size, thick skin, and deadly horns. [43] However, adult black rhinos have fallen prey to crocodiles in exceptional circumstances. [44] Calves and, very seldom, small sub-adults may be preyed upon by lions as well. [3]
