Birmingham Zoo was opened on 1 May 1964 by the Dudley Zoological Society, within Cannon Hill Park. The site of the park was once part of a 16th-century fulling mill, known as Pebble Mill. [3] It was designed to exhibit mainly young animals, but it also housed Dudley Zoo's collection of monkeys and two dromedaries for rides.
The Cannon Hill estate was well stocked with pheasants, partridges, hares and rabbits and entertained shooting parties. [4] Local house builder Mr Blay offered 60 acres (24 ha) of land to Merton and Morden Urban District Council for the creation of Cannon Hill Common. The Council agreed to purchase 53½ acres at a cost of £17,610.

The site was derelict land, which was turned into a park by large-scale earth-moving to create an undulating landscape with wild flower grassland mixes and over 50,000 small trees. It was opened in 1995. Facilities include a millennium centre and a fishing lake. [1] it has a mixture of grazed wetland and dry habitats next to the River Rom. [3]
