The first church was constructed in 1884, and with a predominantly Polish congregation, the parish began to grow. [1] During the pastorate of the Rev. Casmir Skory, St. Mary's School was founded in 1893 with Dominican Sisters as teachers. Also during his pastorate a new church was built from 1900 to 1901 for about $15,000.
St. Mary's parish was founded in 1853 by the Rev. Henry J.H. Schutjes as a mission of St. Joseph parish in Bay City. [4] The first church building was dedicated the same year and the second church building was built ten years later. St. Mary's became a parish in 1866 and the Rev. Francis T. Van der Bom was named the first pastor.
