I just moved to Columbus from the youngstown area for a new job and I'm going to be stuck at public land until I can find some private land. My question is what public land is there somewhat close to Columbus and has anyone ever had much luck at any public land down here. I'm use to hunting private land back home and have never deer hunted ...
correct me if im wrong, but with the new policy you can only take one doe on public land then after the week long gun season you can take a buck, so my thoughts are find a spot on public land and look for a doe at the beginning of the season, but yea Im going to check out west branch and probably mosquito and possibly berlin if the other to don't seem promising
When I lived in Gwinnett County I hunted public land almost exclusively for many years and if you are willing to do what is necessary, public land hunting can be very good. Also, if you decide to hunt in the North Georgia mountains, read the bear hunting section on this forum, there is a tremendous amount of information available there for bear ...
Yeah my brother saw the game warden with some Amish men last year during gun season. Lets say they got in some trouble had six deer between two men on there buggy non where tagged and they where hunting public land. The game warden was loading there guns into there truck and another heaving the deer into the bed of there infamous green truck!!
Then I realized the most important thing to encountering mature deer on public land is just being out there as often as possible and covering ground with your bow in hand. Habitat changes by the year and food sources by the day. Ohio has alot of hunting pressure but the deer come out of the woodwork when conditions are prime.
First season I can remember in 20 years I didn’t hunt any public land. There were years I spent nearly all my hunting time on public. I had a few rough seasons in terms of sightings and hunter pressure specifically non res starting around 13’. I will say the private I’ve hunted this year has produced lifetime records of deer sightings.
Step 6- Purchase all required licenses. You will need a hunting license, WMA license (if hunting a WMA), Big Game license (if hunting Big Game), HIP permit (if hunting migratory birds), Federal and State Duck Stamp (if hunting Waterfowl), and any additional permits required for land outside of WMAs (some USACOE land requires a permit).
Anyone have any experience with public land in Missouri? Trying to do a little research on the public land so I can plan a trip or 2 there. I'd be bow hunting only so maybe the pressure wont be as bad. I know they have some big deer and like to possibly have a opportunity.
The only cost we got is gas and licenses. But me and my family go to Ohio every spring buying show pigs so this trip will be a whole lot cheaper and funner. I never realized there was so much public hunting in Ohio going to try to look into the southern part next year. Thanks for all of your info.
