[1] The aircraft bears the company designation XA41, but is marketed under the name Sbach 300, [1] although use of this name was later abandoned. [2]

The Lycoming IO-580 engine is a horizontally opposed, six-cylinder aircraft engine featuring three cylinders per side, manufactured by Lycoming Engines. [1]There is no carburetted version of the engine, which would have been designated O-580 and therefore the base model is the IO-580.
The powerplant is a fuel-injected Lycoming AEIO-540 which produces 300 horsepower (224 kW). The first two-seat Extra 300 made its maiden flight on 6 May 1988, with German type certification following on 16 May 1990. The single-seat Extra 300S flew on 4 March 1992. [1] The Extra 300 is stressed for ±10 G with one person on board and ±8 G with two.
