Several years prior to the main plot, Takeo Saeki murders his wife Kayako after discovering she is in love with another man, also killing the family cat, Mar, and his son, Toshio. The murders create a curse that revives the family as vengeful ghosts, which results in Kayako's ghost murdering Takeo.
Kayako Saeki (portrayed by Takako Fuji and Aiko Horiuchi) is the primary antagonist of The Grudge series. In life, she was an ordinary housewife and mother. When she was a child, her mother performed unorthodox exorcisms and passed her clients' curses to Kayako instead of herself.
Drawing inspiration from The Grudge 2, The Beginning of the End features a new backstory regarding the curse, while still featuring the Saeki family as an integral part of the plot. After receiving a letter from Kayako, Peter visits the Saeki house only to find her and Takeo's corpses and Toshio's ghost. Shocked and horrified, he flees the scene and commits suicide the next day. The remainder of the Saeki family rises again as restless ghosts due to the curse, notably Kayako, who appears as an onryō.

There, she is violently killed by Takeo Saeki in exactly the same manner as his wife, Kayako, was. She turned into an Onryō due to dying in extreme sorrow and pain. From that point on, she replaces Kayako until Allison comes face to face with her. Whether she still resides in the house as Kayako's replacement is unknown.
