It was founded in 1905 and took on its current name in 1918 after previously being known as the School of Education. The college offers undergraduate, graduate, and online programs in areas including elementary education, early childhood education, special education, and Educational Organization and Leadership.
The programs are possible after record state funding increases last year for early childhood education and the passage of a constitutional amendment in 2022 to secure future funding for the field.
Early childhood intervention came about as a natural progression from special education for children with disabilities (Guralnick, 1997). Many early childhood intervention support services began as research units in universities (for example, Syracuse University in the United States and Macquarie University in Australia) while others were developed out of organizations helping older children.
The Master of Arts in Special Education is a two-year master degree but, depending on the program, some may be completed in as little as 18 months.
