Dravidian languages include Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and a number of other languages spoken mainly in South Asia. The list is by no means exhaustive. Telugu is an agglutinative language with person, tense, case and number being inflected on the end of nouns and verbs. Its word order is usually subject-object-verb, with the direct object following the indirect object. The grammatical function of the words are marked by suffixes that indicate case and postpositions that follow the oblique stem.
Speakers of Telugu refer to it as simply Telugu or Telugoo. [49] Older forms of the name include Teluṅgu and Tenuṅgu. [50] Tenugu is derived from the Proto-Dravidian word *ten ("south") [51] to mean "the people who lived in the south/southern direction" (relative to Sanskrit and Prakrit-speaking peoples).
