The Orb of Shielding reports (emphasis mine): An orb of shielding is a polished, spherical chunk of crystal or stone aligned to one of the planes of existence. If you're a spellcaster, you can use this orb as a spellcasting focus. The Ruby Weave Gem is clearly a crystal, and its description says (emphasis mine):
While attuned to an orb, you can use an action to peer into the orb's depths and speak its command word. You must then make a DC 15 Charisma check. On a successful check, you control the orb for as long as you remain attuned to it. On a failed check, you become charmed by the orb for as long as you remain attuned to it.

Both Mind Blank and the Ring of Mind Shielding provide an absolute protection against the Dream spell. Mind Blank's text (emphasis mine) states: Until the spell ends, one willing creature you touch is immune to psychic damage, any effect that would sense it's emotions or read its thoughts, divination spells, and the charmed condition.

The Ring of Mind Shielding blocks magic that lets other creatures know your alignment. In the Glyph of Warding example, for instance, the glyph functions as normal since the glyph isn't a creature. The Outer Planes' Psychic Dissonance affect works as normal because the Outer Planes aren't a creature.
If the game calls out "shield" it means a shield. If it called out "offhand" that would be a different kettle of fish. It does work for shield bash though, which makes a thunder forged orb pretty useful. No, an orb is an orb. No, HOWEVER, sources of Secondary Shield Strikes do actually make you attack with your orb automatically.
