In 2006, Arizona Eastern announced the construction of a new 10-mile (16 km) spur from Safford to the new Safford Mine of Freeport-McMoRan Corporation, north of Safford. [4] The mine opened in 2008. In 2008, AZER purchased the Clifton Subdivision from Union Pacific. [ 2 ]
The mine is owned and operated by Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold. Construction on the Safford mine began in mid-2006. Production began December 26, 2007, with full production starting in 2008. [1] It is the first new large-scale copper mining project in Arizona in more than 30 years. [2]
