Faneuil Hall (/ ˈ f æ n j əl / or / ˈ f æ n əl /; previously / ˈ f ʌ n əl /) is a marketplace and meeting hall located near the waterfront and today's Government Center, in Boston, Massachusetts. Opened in 1742, [2] it was the site of several speeches by Samuel Adams, James Otis, and others encouraging independence from Great Britain.
The venue opened June 13, 1986, as the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts; with a performance by Yo-Yo Ma and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. [3] It was one of the busiest venues in New England, hosting nearly 80 concerts per season. Over the years, additional amphitheaters were added to the region.
The arena opened in 1972 and the convention center opened in 2005. It serves as a venue for meetings, conventions, exhibitions, sporting and entertainment events. Previously owned and operated by the City of Springfield and various management groups until 1997, the city transferred ownership of the facility to the Massachusetts Legislature.
