LASIK or Lasik (/ ˈ l eɪ s ɪ k /; "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis"), commonly referred to as laser eye surgery or laser vision correction, is a type of refractive surgery for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. [1]
PRK disadvantages include a longer recovery time for vision in contrast to LASIK which may be between five days and two weeks for blurred vision to properly clear. [4] [6] Another disadvantage is that patient may be required to apply steroid eye drops for a few weeks longer than that of a LASIK procedure. [3]
In order to see a clear image, the eye must focus rays of light on to the light-sensing part of the eye – the retina, which is located in the back of the eye. This focusing – called refraction – is performed mainly by the cornea and the lens, which are located at the front of the eye, the anterior segment.
Laser Blended Vision can be achieved through laser eye surgery, usually performed as LASIK, although surface laser eye surgery PRK or LASEK can be used to produce the effect. Laser Blended Vision works by increasing the depth of field of each eye through subtle changes in the optics of the corneal spherical aberration. [2]
This can include various methods of surgical remodeling of the cornea (keratomileusis), lens implantation or lens replacement. The most common methods today use excimer lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. Refractive eye surgeries are used to treat common vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and astigmatism.
Astigmatism, a disorder that affects how the eyes focus light, can be exacerbated at night. Blurry vision and headaches are symptoms of astigmatism. Astigmatism, a disorder that affects how the ...
Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK): Laser eye surgery to reshape the cornea, so that glasses or contact lenses are no longer needed. [20] [23] Excimer laser LASIK can correct hypermetropia up to +6 diopters. [21] LASIK is contraindicated in patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. [21]
Radial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia (nearsightedness). It was developed in 1974 by Svyatoslav Fyodorov, a Russian ophthalmologist. It has been largely supplanted by newer, more accurate operations, such as photorefractive keratectomy, LASIK, Epi-LASIK and the phakic intraocular lens. [1]
