Callinectes sapidus (from the Ancient Greek κάλλος,"beautiful" + nectes, "swimmer", and Latin sapidus, "savory"), the blue crab, Atlantic blue crab, or, regionally, the Maryland blue crab, is a species of crab native to the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and introduced internationally.
Portunus pelagicus, also known as the blue crab, blue swimmer crab, blue manna crab and flower crab is a species of large crab found in the Indo-Pacific, including off the coasts Indonesia, [1] Malaysia, [2] Cambodia, [3] Thailand, [4] the Philippines, [5] and Vietnam; [6] and in the intertidal estuaries around most of Australia and east to New Caledonia.
Maximum size across the carapace is around 200mm [1] to 250mm, [2] with up to 800mm maximum claw span. [ 2 ] The color is variable, but the carapace of males is generally dark blue-green with spots overall and bands at the front, whereas females are similarly pattered but brownish and with the tips of the claws deep brownish red. [ 1 ]
The carapace may reach 15 centimetres (5.9 in) wide, and 7 cm (2.8 in) from front to back. P. trituberculatus may be distinguished from the closely related (and also widely fished) P. armatus by the number of broad teeth on the front of the carapace (three in P. trituberculatus, four in P. armatus) and on the inner margin of the merus (four in P. trituberculatus, three in P. armatus).
Mictyris longicarpus, the light-blue soldier crab, is a species of crab that lives on sandy beaches from the Bay of Bengal to Australia; with other members of the genus Mictyris, it is "one of the most loved crabs in Australia". [2] Adults are 25 mm (1 in) across, white, with blue on their backs, and hold their claws vertically.
Lee ‘Lucky’ Alewine sorts blue crabs on Sept. 20, 2024, throwing back small ones or females carrying eggs and keeping crabs that are at least five inches from across the shell, point to point.
