Monarto Safari Park, formerly known as Monarto Zoological Park and Monarto Zoo, is a 1,500-hectare (3,700-acre) open-range zoo located in South Australia administered by the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia. By area, Monarto Safari Park is the largest zoo in Australia. [2]
In 1983, the society opened Monarto Zoo (now called Monarto Safari Park), located approximately 70 kilometers east of Adelaide. Monarto Zoo covers an area of over 1,500 hectares and is home to over 500 animals from more than 50 species. The zoo is operated by the RZSSA and is dedicated to the conservation of Australian and exotic wildlife. [1]
Burma arrived at Monarto Safari Park in November 2024. [3] She was given a police escort from Adelaide Airport to the park [14] and was kept in quarantine for a month. [15] She is the first of five elephants that will be housed in a 12-hectare site at the park, and was the first elephant to live in South Australia for 30 years. [3]

The project of Monarto was ambitious, but the shortfall in urban planning and the different obstacles meant it remained an unrealised proposal and the plan never came to fruition. A large portion of the land targeted by the project has now been taken up by the Monarto Safari Park, established in 1983 as Monarto Zoo.
It is administered by the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia Incorporated (trading as Zoos South Australia or Zoos SA), which is a full institutional member of the Zoo and Aquarium Association and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and which also administers the Monarto Safari Park near Murray Bridge.
