An octreotide scan is a type of SPECT scintigraphy used to find carcinoid, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and to localize sarcoidosis. It is also called somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS). Octreotide , a drug similar to somatostatin , is radiolabeled with indium-111 , [ 1 ] and is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream.
Technetium (99m Tc) sestamibi (commonly sestamibi; USP: technetium Tc 99m sestamibi; trade name Cardiolite) is a pharmaceutical agent used in nuclear medicine imaging. The drug is a coordination complex consisting of the radioisotope technetium-99m bound to six (sesta=6) methoxyisobutylisonitrile (MIBI) ligands.
Octreotide is used for the treatment of growth hormone producing tumors (acromegaly and gigantism), when surgery is contraindicated, pituitary tumors that secrete thyroid-stimulating hormone (thyrotropinoma), [citation needed] diarrhea and flushing episodes associated with carcinoid syndrome, and diarrhea in people with vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors ().
A sestamibi parathyroid scan is a procedure in nuclear medicine which is performed to localize parathyroid adenoma, which causes Hyperparathyroidism. [1] Adequate localization of parathyroid adenoma allows the surgeon to use a minimally invasive surgical approach.
Medical optical imaging is the use of light as an investigational imaging technique for medical applications, pioneered by American Physical Chemist Britton Chance.Examples include optical microscopy, spectroscopy, endoscopy, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, laser Doppler imaging, and optical coherence tomography.
Ultrasounds are non-invasive and they are used especially on young women, [11] who are usually characterized by dense breasts, but the images interpretation depends on the operator's experience. MRI shows a good correlation with the tumour dimensions and is claimed to be the best method for the identification and characterization of lesions. [ 12 ]
Gated SPECT is a nuclear medicine imaging technique, typically for the heart in myocardial perfusion imagery. [1] An electrocardiogram (ECG) guides the image acquisition, and the resulting set of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images shows the heart as it contracts over the interval from one R wave to the next.
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women, and an estimated 27% of people live at least 5 years after being diagnosed with stage IV cancer according to the National Cancer Institute. [1] Mammography is the most commonly used method to screen for cancer, but there are three major drawbacks. [2] The first is ionizing radiation. Since mammography uses ...
