The Paraguayan Liberal Party fought with the Colorado Party for dominance of the country during the first half of the 20th century. By the end of the Alfredo Stroessner regime the Liberal Party of Paraguay no longer existed, but its political successor, the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, is now the second largest political party in the country.

During the 2003 Paraguayan general election, at the legislative elections the party won 35.3% of the popular vote (37 out of 80 seats) in the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay and 32.9% (16 out of 45 seats) in the Senate. Its candidate at the presidential elections on the same date, Nicanor Duarte, was elected with 37.1% of the popular vote.
Its presidential candidate Pedro Fadul received 21.9% of the popular vote. In the 2008 elections it was reduced to three seats in the Chamber and four in the Senate, whilst Fadul won 2.5% of the vote in the presidential election.
