The 2011 Mustang GT marked this engine's first use in any production Ford. While the new engine's displacement was similar to Ford's original "5.0" 4.9 L (302 cu in) V8 , it was an unrelated design and instead shared more in common with the 4.6 L V8 and other Modular engines that it replaced.
The engine retains the Coyote's forged steel crank and piston-cooling jets but benefits from the addition of an external engine oil cooler similar to the Boss 302's. The changes result in the engine's peak horsepower dropping to 360 hp (268 kW; 365 PS) at 5500 rpm, while torque is rated at 380 lb⋅ft (520 N⋅m) at 4250 rpm.
The engine is a 5.4-liter version of the Coyote V-8 co-developed by Ford Performance and Britain’s M-Sport, the firm that builds Ford’s Puma and Fiesta rally cars.
